Freedom Writers is a youth creative coding programme that turns screen time into skill time — using the game your child already loves.
We kept hearing the same thing from parents: "My child is obsessed with Roblox — I just wish they were doing something more with it." And from young people: "I want to make games, not just play them."
So we built the bridge. The Roblox Creator Challenge is a structured, five-week summer programme that gives young people aged 11–16 the skills, mentorship, and motivation to move from player to creator — and a real prize pool to compete for.
No coding background needed. No expensive equipment. Just a laptop, a Roblox account, and the drive to build something.
Roblox is one of the largest game creation platforms in the world — and your child is already on it. Roblox Studio (the creation tool) uses Lua, a beginner-friendly scripting language used in real industry products. Skills learned here transfer directly to web development, game design, and software engineering.
Crucially, Roblox lowers the barrier to entry. Young people don't need to learn abstract programming concepts in isolation — they see their code come to life inside a world they already understand. That instant feedback loop is one of the most powerful teaching tools in existence.
"Every young person deserves the chance to be a creator, not just a consumer."
Our judging criteria rewards effort, logic, and creativity — not luck. Every participant learns real, transferable skills.
Roblox Studio is free. A basic laptop is enough. We deliberately chose tools that don't price young people out.
Every element of the programme — from platforms to communication — is built with safeguarding at the centre.
A finished game, a prize, and a skill set. Participants finish with something concrete they built themselves.
Kevin founded Freedom Writers with one goal: to give young people from all backgrounds access to the creative economy. With experience spanning education, social enterprise, and digital media, he designed the Roblox Creator Challenge to be simultaneously rigorous and genuinely fun. He oversees every aspect of programme delivery and safeguarding.
Michael is a Roblox developer and educator who has spent five years teaching young people game design and Lua scripting. He created the Quest Line framework used across the programme — a structured build-along curriculum that takes participants from their first script to a fully functional published game, one milestone at a time. Michael runs all live sessions and office hours.
Freedom Writers is a social enterprise initiative of OWH Ltd, dedicated to expanding access to digital creative education for young people across the UK. All programme proceeds are reinvested directly into content development, safeguarding infrastructure, and future programme delivery.
